Isle of Wight: Year 6 School Journey 2012

A report about the recent Year 6 Journey to the Isle of Wight by Miss Gillett.

The weather was kind to us and we only had heavy rain Thursday afternoon and evening. The week was action packed with visits each day.

On the way to the Isle of Wight we visited the D-Day Museum at Southsea. On Tuesday we saw an excellent glass blowing demonstration at Alum Bay. We then went to fill our sand sculptures before seeing the Needles. In the afternoon we experienced the Amazon at Amazon World. It was great to see the animals so close!

Next day, Wednesday, was very full as we went to St Mildred's Church first where we had an interesting talk from the Church Warden who brought the history of the church to life and prepared us for our visit to Osborne House. The children loved looking in all the rooms in the house and were fascinated how people must have lived in Victorian times without play stations, X-boxes, TVs, mobiles, cameras etc. The afternoon was spent at Robin Hill a theme park and the highlight was the ride on the galleon.

Thursday saw us at Carisbrook Castle in the morning, where we were disappointed not to see the donkeys working the tread mill but Louise, who looks after the donkeys, gave us a demonstration and talked about the donkey's day. On a wet
Thursday afternoon we walked through Shanklin Chine and
were fascinated by PLUTO (the pipeline under the  ocean
which was used in the war).

On Friday morning we caught an early ferry to the mainland and went to visit the Action Stations at Portsmouth. Every evening apart from Thursday the children enjoyed playing on the beach. The children were a credit to the school. A big thank you goes to Andy Nicholls, Mrs Byrne and Mr Crow for giving of their time to go on the trip.
